Can nature restore itself?

We hear bad news about our planet almost every day. Climate change, wildfires, floods, and the disappearance of plants and animals. Sometimes it seems as if nature is only deteriorating.

However, there is also good news.

In more and more places in Europe, nature is being given space again. Dams are being removed, rivers are allowed to flow freely again, and forests are recovering. Wild animals such as the beaver, the otter, the wolf, and the lynx are returning.

Nature is often much stronger than we think.

A good example of this is the organization www.rewilding.com

That gives hope.

Of course, we cannot save the Earth by simply letting nature take its course. But we can give it a helping hand by giving it space again.

Elon Musk dreams of taking humans to Mars. An impressive achievement. But perhaps the greatest challenge lies much closer to home. We already have a habitable planet. Let's take good care of it first.

Perhaps the most important journey humanity still has to make is not the one to Mars, but the way back to a healthy Earth.

That idea also plays a role in "Window in Spacetime" . A civilization that can persist for a very long time will not only be technically advanced. Perhaps a civilization only truly begins to mature when it learns to treat its own planet with care.

Illustration of nature restoration in Europe with a removed dam, free-flowing river, beaver, otter, wolf, lynx, and red deer.
